The Valtiberina, also known as the upper Alta Valle del Tevere is a valley in Tuscany known for its beautiful parks and medieval villages.



This Valley is notoriously linked to three important figures: figure of Piero della Francesca, born in the town of Sansepolcro, the figure of San Francesco who repeatedly crossed the Valley to reach the sanctuary of La Verna and figure Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in Caprese Michelangelo from which the municipality took the name.

The Valtiberina is drawn by the river Tevere and extends along Tuscany and Umbria. The Tiber, but also the landscapes of the Valley were often depicted in paintings by Piero della Francesca to the fascination exerted on the painter. Especially in the cycle of frescoes the Leggenda della Vera Croce the pelvis is represented as a Valley full of water. This territory full of history can be explored by visiting the ancient citadels that characterize it, including the medieval village of Anghiari. Pliny the younger, Roman Senator called this land "a natural Amphitheater" where he owned a villa.

The Valtiberina offers the chance to relive the routes routes from St. Francis, fully immersed himself in nature and history of monasteries and churches. In addition to see Michelangelo and Piero della Francesca. Throughout the year the Valtiberina is rich in fairs, exhibitions, museums, markets.



Among the traditions every second Sunday of the month at Anghiari takes place Memorandia, a lively antique market. The Carnevale di Sansepolcro takes place on days 10 and 11 February with live entertainment and plenty of music.


Typical products

The Valtiberina is a cross of flavours, where one thing is certain: in this Valley can not miss a pasta dish. In fact, this is where did the note manufacturing company of Buitoni's pasta. The typical food products used in the kitchen of Valtiberina are polenta, wild boar stew, the mushrooms, the eel of Abdelaziz (seasoned pork sausage) and also cheese.
