THE VILLAGE MEDICEO WHICH WAS 'CITTA' DEL SOLE'

Sestino is the northernmost municipality of Tuscany, situated at the foot of the Apennines between Tuscany and Umbria-Marche. Is 496 meters above sea level, allowing you to see the green landscape of the Valtiberina.

The village is positioned at the foot of the one step that was used to reach the regions on the border with Tuscany. A strategic point where in Roman built a spa town that today you can relive through documentation of Roman Antiquarium.

In 1554 Cosimo I de ' Medici decided to build the Città del Sole: a fortified city built at high altitudes on the Summit of Sasso di Simone. The project was discontinued, and today, in the nature reserve, you can admire the streets and ancient ruins that were designed at the time.

Traditions and typical products

The traditional celebration of Sestino is the Sagra della Bistecca Chianina. A three-day summer event, more than just a Festival where food stalls are set up to enjoy a special Tuscan meat. The event will conclude with Palio del Buratto. A medieval reenactment where representatives of the districts of Andrew compete in a horse race.
