Maggio of Castiglione d'Orcia

An ancient tradition

One of the oldest traditions and feel the stunning town of Castiglion d'Orcia and surrounding countryside of Val d'Orcia is "Maggio".

During the night between April 30 and may day a group of about twenty singers and musicians, wanders through the villages and along the campaign by visiting the farms, and singing quatrains wishing the return of good weather, good harvests and singing love and the reawakening of nature.

The singers and performers parade through the streets of the village until the morning of May 1, in return here so called "maggiaioli" receive hospitality, wine, food and money. The money that the Group collects during the begging, are used, later, to set up a lunch for maggiaioli and their relatives and a snack is open to everyone.
