A range of landscapes characterized the area of the Colline Metallifere, that develops in the North of the province of Grosseto: we move from inland Beach, the Maquis until you reach the Maremma Coast made of white beaches lapped by a thick pine forest and clear sea

 

WHERE NATURE IS SOVEREIGN

To the North of the province of Grosseto, in a ideal descent that from the Gulf of Follonica leads at the coast of the maremma grossetana, extends the area of Colline Metallifere. The territory is characterized by a great abundance of water: the rivers Merse, Ombrone and Cecina mark  ideally the boundaries. Also the Terme di Petriolo, freely accessible and unique example of fortified thermal baths, situated just a short drive from Siena are part of Colline Metellifere.

 

TUSCAN MINING GEOPARK UNESCO

It's an important story as mining of these areas, enhanced by Parco Tecnologico e Archeologico delle Colline Metallifere Grossetane which has been awarded the UNESCO as Tuscan Mining Geopark.

You can still see the remains of the Etruscan mines in the area, the best known Etruscan and Roman then di Gavorrano and Monterotondo reached their greatness just like mining centres and steel because of the abundance of copper, silver and iron available in the area. Become a very rich territory and contended in the middle ages for its mines, the activity continued until the 20th century. The pride of the period, which is absolutely worth a walk is the village of Massa Marittima, a precious example of medieval town planning.

Typical products

The Monteregio DOC wine,  produced in the area around Massa Marittima and the different variations of red, rosé, white is one of the typical products of the territory that goes well with the traditional dishes of Maremma: the tortelli maremmani, acqua cotta and Pappardelle with wild boar sauce.

 

Municipalities

Are part of the territory of the Colline Metallifere the municipalities of: Monteverdi Marittimo; Monterotondo Marittimo, Montieri, Roccastrada (Grosseto).

The Union of municipalities montana Colline Metallifere is the Union of the municipalities of Massa Marittima, Monterotondo Marittimo, Monteverdi Marittimo, Montieri, Roccastrada, Gavorrano.
