The rivalry between Pisa and Livorno

A history linked to the construction of the port in the 16th century

The rivalry between Pisa and Livorno is a reality that has always accompanied the two cities. A typical Tuscan history, daughter of an old parochialism symbol of a whole region.

The origins of the rivalry are ancient, traced back to the time of Medici and have different roots than the other contrasts that exist.

Pisa and Livorno have their clashes at the birth of the port of Livorno, built by Cosimo I de' Medici in the 16th century. A curious story, other than those of the other rivalry Tuscan towns which usually arose in the medieval period when Italy was considered the land of steeples.

The growth of the port of Livorno

The Medici worked with attention on the construction of the port, with the intent to make Livorno an Italian commercial leader realities, with an international flair to the circulation of merchants, adventurers and seamen.

But Pisa that bond has to do with this?

Pisa, was considered a maritime Republic of absolute prestige the 11th and 15th centuries, but was going through a period of recession due to the many battles had seen involved.

Why the increase in the port of Livorno sounded like a threat to its power, an affront that the Pisans could not endure and that from that moment he put the two cities against each other.

The rivalry today

The time passes, but the rifts remain. Be located in Livorno or Pisa means living a climate of animosity between the two beautiful Tuscan cities, obviously full of joke in the typical Tuscan spirit.

Pisa and Livorno continue to launch messages of challenge every day, from the circles to squares, the local papers and obviously in stadiums, sometimes without even mentioning what the true reason of this hatred so ancient.

Tuscany is also this, allegory and folklore that the genuineness of a vivacious earth mirrors that it cannot live without the game and of the joke. Every pretext is good to mock "the enemy", always in the respect of the values and the fun.

Live Tuscany and his people!
