The Festa del Perdono has ancient origins and is linked to Catholicism. Is celebrated in many villages located between Florence and Arezzo and has its main centres in the Valdarno. There are municipalities that are the most important holiday of the year including: Montevarchi, San Giovanni Valdarno, Terranuova Bracciolini, Bucine, Cavriglia, Pian di Scò and Figline Valdarno.

The origins can be traced back to medieval times, when over 1300 the Lords of each district with violent actions claimed its authority. In contrast to this violence was to form a group of pacifists called 'Penitents'. These passed through the city streets to spread peace, love and forgiveness. Today their exploits are retraced every year celebrating the feast of pardon in Valdarno in September.
