San Romano in Garfagnana is immersed in a wide green area, in the heart of the National Park of the Appennino tosco-emiliano.

The history of the village centres around the Fortezza delle Verrucole which was built around the year 1000. The Tuscan family of Gherardinghi decided to build a fortification for military purposes to defend the village against attacks. An impressive example of medieval architecture and striking, which still can be seen from the top of the Hill on which it was placed. Since 1296 the Fort passed into the hands of several Lords who inhabited San Romano, now public place to visit to discover its ancient secrets through the project Archeopark.

Reaching the dirt roads that lead into the area perched the village, you can reach the ancient building. An opportunity to discover the history of the country and the hidden places of the fortification, through activities and castellan dressed in medieval clothes.
