SAN CASCIANO, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN ITALY

San Casciano is situated in the southern foothills of Monte Cetona. The Center and its history are closely linked to the presence of numerous hot springs, about 42 in total with a temperature of 40 degrees.

Tradition has it that it was Lucumo Porsenna of Chiusi to found these baths, appreciated and known by both the Romans and Etruscans. At the entrance of the Spa is the oldest monument of the village, the pagan temple dating from the fourth century, dedicated to the goddess of health, Hygeia.

Despite the hot springs are the main attraction of the village, San Casciano also maintains a refined historic centre, full of old churches, medieval squares and hidden alleys.

You should also visit the ancient city walls, gates and two towers, one square and the other pentagonal shaped.

The main church of the village is the Collegiate Church of St Leonard dating back to the XIII-XIV century which is flanked by the 16th-century "Oratorio di Sant'Antonio".

A short distance from San Casciano is the village of Fighine dominated by 11th-century castle which offers a splendid view over the Val di Chiana.
