The art of weaving straw and working wood
The Maremma has always been a land of agriculture, foundries, mines and timber. The latter in particular was used in countless ways: to produce charcoal, the blossoming chestnut branches interwoven to create baskets and baskets or still worked to create tools and utensils for daily use.
Among the crafts that developed around the woodwork is the ancient art of Chair-maker, craftsman who with wood and straw was able to create small masterpieces.
Sewing Chairs, to rest in front of the fireplace, rocking chairs, each with its own use and its own nature. The Chair makers still use only natural materials and products. The wood is treated with beeswax and the seagrass weaving run with Marsh grasses collected in summer.
Even today in the small medieval villages in the area, such as Massa Marittima, you can visit the reconstruction of an old Carpenter in which exposes the old tools of the trade. A workshop-Museum founded with the intention of documenting the craft the Carpenter and the craft sector in General; admission is free from June to September from 11 to 19.
