A TUSCAN JEWEL IN MEDIEVAL STYLE
San Gimignano is positioned at the foot of the Elsa's river, in the upper part of the hilly area of the Val d'Elsa.
Inhabited since Etruscan times, the town developed in the Middle Ages when starting from the 13th began the construction of many public works and famous towers still visible today. After the battle of Montaperti between Florence and Siena, the ancient walls surrounding the historical centre were destroyed but later rebuilt. The San Gimignano changed and since the fourteenth century began the roll that has led it to be a jewel of Tuscany.
Many artists such as Domenico Ghirlandaio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Piero del Pollaio and attended the city and contributed to enriching buildings with precious works of art.
The most fascinating architectures are the Torre Rognosa, the oldest in the city, and the Torre Grossa, the highest; both are perfectly intact. The entire old town is charming, and it is obligatory to wander the narrow streets that cross the entire city. Many churches are hosting the frescoes of artists who lived, as the Martirio di San Sebastiano by Gozzoli inside the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta.
