THE COUNTRY DIVIDED BETWEEN GUELPHS AND GHIBELLINES

Pontremoli is positioned in the heart of the beautiful Tuscan hills of Lunigiana, and became a strategic place developing on an ancient route that connected his territory to Liguria and the Po Valley.

The country was the subject of contention between the Tuscan families in the Middle Age, and divided into two parts by a wall to separate the Guelphs by the Ghibellines. Of this building remains today the Tower del Capannone can be visited along the historic monuments.

Among the main places to visit is the sixteenth-century Chiesa della SS. Annunziata, whose interior can be visited a shrine decorated marble from an Annunciation by Jacopo Sansovino.

Traditions and Typical products

Among the typical products of Pontremoli include the Amor and "Torta d'Erbi", two specialties that exist in many eateries in the country. The "Torta d'Erbi", a pie filled with spinach, ricotta and pecorino cheese and stuffed by a very fine "Amor", cookies cream flavoured with cognac.
