Medici possession since 1628, Castellina Marittima becomes an important mining centre of Cecina Valley with the opening of the Alabaster quarries in the late XIX century.

Similar to marble, alabaster has allowed it to develop a thriving local handicrafts both at home and in the surrounding towns including Volterra. The Museo dell'Alabastro is one of the main attraction of the place, which houses works made by hand with this material.

Traditional craftsmanship of Castellina is the alabaster; the city for more than two centuries constitutes one of the most important Tuscan handicraft locations.
