Made during World War II to defend the civilian population from the bombings that struck the city, the shelters are now silent witnesses of that sad page in the history.
The air-raid shelter of Martana is one of these, and is located in the historic center of Massa. It is the largest air-raid shelter built in the city and was able to accommodate thousands of people. It was made in about a year's work, between 1942 and 1943, from Venetian miners of Belluno.
Consisting of a spacious Gallery carved into the rock 450 meters long with three entrances, has artificial openings with the function of ventilation chimneys to ensure a constant air exchange inside the shelter.
Retrace today those cold galleries is a unique opportunity to understand the dramatic historical period and the mood that the population lived during alarms.
Today you can visit air-raid shelter of Martana, was recovered and re-opened by the commune of Massa in 2006, with the desire to preserve a place of memory. The tour is enhanced by photographs and touching video interviews to those who lived the experience of the war firsthand when, at the sound of the dreaded siren anti-aircraft, you had to run to take refuge in his dark tunnels.
The bomb shelter of Martana is on via Bigini 55-56 in Massa (MS), opened on Saturday afternoon from 04 pm to 06 pm with entrance and free guided tours.
