The Palio dei Caci of Volterra

From the middle ages a fun and flavorful fun challenge

This year, the last Sunday in October, as usual, will take place in Volterra the expected and fun Palio dei Caci. An event now recognized by time in the regional roll of pageants in collaboration with the "Committee of the Districts of the city of Volterra."

On 28 March the streets of the beautiful medieval town will be transformed into a track where contestants will be representatives from each district that will be tumbling along the way in steep slope one cheese, in the shortest time possible.

Characters in this comedic challenge: a serpentine path built with straw presses, the shooters, two wood pallets and the ubiquitous cheese delle balze volterrane.

A tradition dating back to medieval times, when the cheese, nutritious food, was considered a good alternative to the expensive meat, especially on the tables of the poor. In addition to food, the cheeses were soon to take on a recreational use; Thus Volterra some games they saw as protagonist just the cheese and the ability of the Contrada.

The Palio dei caci is now part of the event Volterragusto, scheduled for the weekend of October 27-28 2018 and 1-4 November. An event full of taste and entertainment, during which the agrifood excellences and many initiatives for the family will enliven the expected event of autumn.

Fun is therefore assured, Sunday 28 October from 15.30 along via Franceschini, in Volterra, with its picturesque and savory Palio dei Caci.
